2019 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank draw headlined by all-Canadian first round match-up

August 3, 2019

Bianca Andreescu and Eugenie Bouchard will face-off on Tuesday night

Toronto, August 2, 2019 – The draw for the 2019 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank took place on top of the beautiful Hotel X Toronto located on the Lake Ontario Waterfront. World No.2 Naomi Osaka and the 2019 Indian Wells champion Bianca Andreescu assisted with the draw, which was also attended by Tournament Director Karl Hale, WTA Supervisor Giulia Orlandi and Tournament Referee Tony Cho.

Highlighting the first round of the 56-player field is an all-Canadian match-up between World No.26 Bianca Andreescu and the former World No.5 Eugenie Bouchard. Meanwhile, the 2019 French Open Junior champion Leylah Annie Fernandez will play against a qualifier in her Rogers Cup main draw debut. The 16 year old from Laval recently won her first two professional titles, winning in both the singles and doubles competition at the Gatineau National Bank Challenger.

The reigning Rogers Cup and Wimbledon champion Simona Halep has a bye into the second round. Her title defense will open up against the winner between Kristina Mladenovic and a qualifier. Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams will face off against Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro in the opening round.

Nine of the Top 10 players in the world are set to take the courts this week at Aviva Centre, after World No.6 Petra Kvitova withdrew on Friday due to a lingering forearm injury. Following Kvitova’s withdrawal, the three-time Rogers Cup champion Serena Williams is now a Top-8 seed and it has been confirmed she will play her first match of the tournament during Wednesday’s night session.

Following Friday’s Draw Ceremony, potential quarter-final match-ups could include:

[1] Ashleigh Barty v. [6] Elina Svitolina

[5] Kiki Bertens v. [3] Karolina Pliskova

[4] Simona Halep v. [7] Sloane Stephens

[8] Serena Williams v. [2] Naomi Osaka
