On Thursday night, reigning National Bank Open champion Bianca Andreescu was forced to hand back her Canadian crown when she fell in three sets to Ons Jabeur (13) of Tunisia (6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1).

The marathon match, which ran over three and half hours with a one-hour rain delay, was marked by a lot of ups and downs, including a downpour, injuries and a reversal of fortune in the middle of the second set.

Suffering from a left toe injury, Bianca Andreescu asked for medical timeout at 3-4 in the second set to calm the pain and her nerves, but the break didn’t get her back on track.

After the rain let up, the Canadian aggravated her injury. The second timeout for a new bandage and some pain management didn’t help either.

Andreescu was broken, lost the set and just couldn’t get back in the match.

At the other end of the court, Ons Jabeur played some great tennis, relying on her energy and smarts to wear her opponent down and break her a total of six times. Jabeur collected 106 points versus 90 to deprive Andreescu of the repeat she was after.

In the dead of night, Jessica Pegula brought Danielle Collins’ quest for a thirteenth consecutive WTA victory to an end. The Americans battled for over two hours, until Pegula wrapped things up at 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and confirmed her spot in the quarterfinals.
