Caroline Wozniacki announces her retirement

December 6, 2019

As a former World No.1, three-time Olympian and flag-bearer for her native Denmark with 30 WTA singles titles including a WTA Finals crown and Grand Slam championship, Caroline Wozniacki has had an outstanding career.

This morning, the 2010 Rogers Cup titleholder announced that she will be retiring from tennis after the Australian Open in January.

Focused on starting a family with her husband, former NBA player David Lee, she also wants to pursue her project to raise awareness of rheumatoid arthritis. A little more than a year ago, Wozniacki revealed she suffers from the inflammatory joint disease.

In Montréal, her best result came in 2010, when she hoisted the winner’s trophy. Then ranked World No.2, she had to battle through a dangerous draw. The 20-year-old dropped only one set as she overpowered four members of the Top 20.

Rogers Cup was her third title of the season and first of such magnitude. “Fans in Montréal are the best!” she told the crowds in the stands that had braved the rain. Her triumph marked the start of her love affair with the city. We wish her all the best in her new life and why not one more Australian Open title to end her tennis career on a high note?
