Maria Sakkari (11) of Greece got her run at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers off to a great start.

This afternoon at IGA Stadium, she disposed of Marie Bouzkova of Czechia, who was forced to retire (6-4, 3-1). Bouzkova was the third player to bow out of the session, which was played in soaring heat and humidity.

Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia retired from her match against Fiona Ferro of France (6-2, 2-6), and American qualifier Amanda Anisimova shook hands early with her rival Tereza Martincova of Czechia (6-1, 4-3).

The very first win of the main draw went to Katerina Siniakova of Czechia, who overpowered Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in the opening match (6-1, 6-3). Paula Badosa of Spain edged out Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland (6-2, 6-3).

In the later matches, Nadia Podoroska of Argentina bulldozed Magda Linette of Poland (6-1, 6-2) and Sorana Cirstea of Romania defeated Alison Riske of the US (6-3, 6-4).

French qualifier Océane Dodin caused the upset when she ousted Karolina Muchova (14) of Czechia in three sets (6-3, 1-6, 6-2).
