Besides the fact that they’re the same age, Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic and Camila Giorgi of Italy couldn’t be more different on the court. This afternoon, they battle to decide who will raise the winner’s trophy at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers.
At 1:30 p.m., two finalists even the most gifted prognosticator wouldn’t have foreseen going head-to-head will take their place on Centre Court in front of 5,000 spectators in the stands and masses of fans watching on their screens.
Fourth seed Pliskova has collected 16 titles in her career. Giorgi has only two, but she remains focused adding more—an ambition she proved this week when she sent three seeds packing and in the past two months when she outplayed Pliskova not once but twice.
Gabriela Dabrowski has her eyes on the doubles title
When the National Bank Open singles draw trophy ceremony is said and done, Gabriela Dabrowski, the Canadian delegation’ sole survivor, and her partner Luisa Stefani of Brazil will challenge Darija Jurak of Croatia and Andreja Klepac of Slovenia (5).
Dabrowski has her eyes on a 10th WTA doubles title. She and Stefani (6) caused the upset earlier this week when they eliminated top seeds Elise Mertens of Belgium and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.
