May 18, 2022

It was another incredible performance for world No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the Internazional BNL d’Italia. Swiatek captured an easy victory against the new world No. 6, Ons Jabeur, in straight sets to grasp yet another WTA 1000 title.

This past weekend, the defending champion dominated the court against Mutua Madrid Open champion Ons Jabeur, winning in straight sets 6-2 6-2. The pair have gone head-to-head four times since 2019, and this time around Swiatek was able to level their series at 2-2.

Swiatek, the youngest ranked player in the top ten has won her last 28 matches and has rarely needed to play a third set. This past tournament was a picture-perfect example of this. Swiatek was able to take all her matches with ease. Winning against former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka and tournament third seed Aryna Sabalenka. Her most difficult match of the tournament was against Canadian Bianca Andreescu who put up a great fight in the quarterfinals forcing a tie break in the first set. However, Swiatek was able to take control in the second set, winning 7-6(2),6-0.

In the finals, Swiatek was able to stay consistent throughout the match, winning 61 percent of first-serve points and 52 per cent of return points. She also converted on 5/9 break points, and turned aside six of the seven she faced.

Swiatek will next make an appearance at the French Open, a tournament she had won back in 2020. She also competed in the tournament in 2021, losing in the quarter-finals to Maria Sakkari.
